It’s no surprise, then, that Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane would look towards Carolina and go after Star Lotulelei after the Panthers let their former first-round pick hit free agency.

Carolina re-signed Kawann Short as opposed to Lotulelei because the former has been a dominant pass-rusher.

Lotulelei’s five-year, $50 million deal netted him $16.5 million fully guaranteed at signing and $33 million over years 1-3, which is right about what Brandon Williams got from the Ravens last year.

Ichiro ‘can’t wait’ to hit against Shohei Ohtani

Ichiro Suzuki, the 44-year-old baseball legend, is back with the Seattle Mariners and in the same division with 23-year-old Japanese phenom P/DH Shohei Ohtani of the Angels.

“I can’t wait to hit off him when he pitches,’’ Ichiro said during his introductory press conference Wednesday. “And when he hits, I’d like to pitch against him.’’

A couple hours after Wednesday’s workout — yes, it was still raining — the Angels held Ohtani’s first press conference of the spring in the Kachina Conference Center, at the Marriott Buttes Resort that overlooks the spring complex. Almost 25 minutes into the event, Scioscia’s comments about pitching being a priority were mentioned, and Ohtani was asked for his thoughts on the subject.

His answer, though interpreter Ippei Mizuhara: “First of all, he always tells me that he wants me to enjoy the game. That’s the first thing he wants me to think about. Of course, after every day of training, we talk, we communicate, we see if we need to adjust, add more or take some away. So we will be communicating, and he is willing to listen to what I have to say, and I will have some input in my role.”

Kings use video-game graphics to perfectly illustrate loss to Spurs

The Kings hung with the Spurs as long as they could Sunday.

But, just when the Kings thought they had the Spurs on the ropes, the seasoned San Antonio team rallied for a 113-98 victory at AT&T Center.

The Kings held a 50-49 halftime lead, but the Spurs outscored the Kings 30-19 in the third quarter. Despite short runs, the Spurs staved off every attempt at a Kings comeback.

Myers is no stranger to the view from the pasture. After starting his professional career as a catcher, he moved to right field in the Double-A Texas League in 2011 and won the American League Rookie of the Year award while starting 68 games in right for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2013. The Padres tried him in center field in 2015, and the experiment was widely regarded as a failure after he logged a minus-7 defensive runs saved.

Irving did it all on his own taking over for the Celtics and dazzling with both his shooting and ball handling. This game means very little in the grand scheme of things, but to see both players performing at such a high level was a treat for fans.

Curry rightfully downplayed the matchup after the game, but it’s hard to overlook his fantastic showing with 49 points, five assists and four rebounds and an 8-for-13 mark from beyond the arc.

“We bring the best out of each other and he’s always battling,” Curry told ESPN. “He’s an amazingly talented player who can do some crazy things on the floor whether I play good defense or not.”

Irving scored 37 points on 13-of-18 shooting. Golden State and Curry may have come away with the win, but games like this can only make people hope to see more of this matchup in the postseason.

Russell Westbrook posted his 15th triple-double of the year with 31 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds, but Carmelo Anthony was the star of the night eclipsing the 25,000 career points mark. Anthony scored 21 points and added five rebounds in a 121-108 win over the Pistons.lions_079

Ervin Santana heads to New York to have injured finger examined

Minnesota Twins right-hander Ervin Santana left spring training for New York to have his injured middle finger examined.

Santana, out until mid-to-late April following surgery on the finger, could have a cast removed.

“Hopefully he comes back lighter … with the cast off,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said before Monday’s exhibition against Philadelphia.

The Blue Jays open the 2018 season on March 29 when they will host the New York Yankees. Either Aledmys Diaz or Yangervis Solarte will likely replace Tulowitzki in the starting lineup.

Tulowitzki, 33, was hitting .249 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs at the time of his injury last season. He is a career .290 hitter with 224 home runs and 779 RBIs in 12 major league seasons.

ALL OF JOE MADDON’S EXPERIENCES as a coach and manager would be put to the test in Games 6 and 7 of the 2016 World Series against the Cleveland Indians. Little did he know at the time, but his decisions the next two days would have a profound effect on the outcome. And though he would be the man to lead the team known as the “Lovable Losers” to their first championship in 108 years, he would face an offseason of questions and criticisms about those moves.

The questions would all revolve around his pitching decisions, mostly as they concerned closer Aroldis Chapman. Chapman had thrown 42 pitches in Game 5, normally knocking him out of commission for several days, if not for this being the World Series. Chapman did have a day off between Games 5 and 6 and declared himself ready for whatever was to come. Maddon would lean on him again for the final two games, leading to a lot of raised eyebrows.lions_134

The Wizards grabbed the opening tip and raced out to 21-point lead.

Morris hit a 3 that started a 14-0 run before Giannis Antetokounmpo drove the lane with four minutes gone for the Bucks’ first points in seven trips. Beal pushed the lead to 26-5 with a running layup off a pass from Satoranski. Kelly Oubre Jr.’s layup made it 40-20 just before the end of the quarter.

Wizards: The Wizards were 16 for 24 (66.7 percent) from the field in the first quarter. . The Wizards had 52 points in the paint to Milwaukee’s 40.

A choppy first half ended with the Bucks leading 46-45. The game got off to a testy start after officials called five technical fouls in the last 6:14 of the first quarter, including one each on Stephenson and Milwaukee’s Sterling Brown after the players got tangled up under the basket. At one point early in the second quarter, the teams had combined for 15 fouls and 19 field goals.

“Both teams were getting after it from the start. Both teams are playing for the same thing,” McMillan said.

Houston’s 14th consecutive victory was in hand early and the Rockets went on to win 105-92.

Harden scored 17 of his 25 points in the first quarter, but claimed he wasn’t trying to stare down the floored Johnson.

“I was just trying to figure out what he was doing,” Harden said. “I didn’t know.

“I was looking at him and he was looking at me,” Harden said. “I was thinking, `What are you doing?’ I was going to shoot it, but I was waiting to figure out what was going on. I was confused. And then I shot it.”

The Clippers had played the previous night in Denver, while the Rockets had the day off.

The Clippers are also missing guards Patrick Beverley (knee surgery) and rookie Jawun Evans (abdominal strain).

Protesters block Minneapolis light rail ahead of Super Bowl 52

Protesters have blocked trains on the light rain system in Minneapolis, the site of Super Bowl 52, hours before game time on Sunday night. The protests appear to be centered around issues of racial inequality, with a Minneapolis-based group, Black Visions Collective, taking credit for the demonstration on the train tracks.

Sometimes, the cuts to create cap space is simply meant to reboot a roster. Last year, the Jets started shedding older players who were making good money but had little upside. Offensive tackle Ryan Clady saw his option declined, which was $10 million. They also cut kicker Nick Folk, which saved the team another $3.5 million despite him being one of the more solid kickers since he came into the league in 2007. They ended up releasing even more veterans later that summer, making it clear that they were on board with a rebuild.

The Cardinals could be a candidate for a similar purge. They have a new coach, need a quarterback after Carson Palmer retired, and have just $22.7 million in cap space after an 8-8 season, according to Over the Cap.

“I want to thank Rich for all of his hard work with the Charlotte Hornets organization through the years and wish him and his family the best in the future,” Jordan said in a statement. “Rich worked tirelessly on behalf of our team and instituted a number of management tools that have benefited our organization. We are deeply committed to our fans and to the city of Charlotte to provide a consistent winner on the court. The search will now begin for our next head of basketball operations who will help us achieve that goal.”

“We have to play a certain way to beat these guys because of how good they are and how much talent they have on their team,” Walker said. “So we’re just really locked in against those guys.”

Tjaguars_115-223x223he loss dropped the Wizards (34-25) into a fourth-place tie with Indiana in the Eastern Conference. Washington had won eight of 10, all coming without All-Star John Wall (knee surgery).

“We just didn’t have energy, focus, no fight back, no nothing,” Beal said. “They flat out whooped us.”

Charlotte scored 28 points off Washington’s 14 turnovers.

Super Bowl 2018: Time, live TV schedule, halftime show, prop bets, odds, online streaming, and more

Super Bowl LII is almost here, a matchup between one team everyone knew would be here and one that was presumed dead two months ago. The New England Patriots will vie for a sixth league championship, while the Philadelphia Eagles, sans Carson Wentz but sporting the resurgent Nick Foles, will try to win their first.

“The first half, offensively, was as good as we’ve played all year,” said Orlando coach Frank Vogel.

Head coach Bill Belichick is a special teams savant, and as a man who keys on the details to create the winning edge, trying to get cute with the kickoff is a way to steal yards or even points.

In the event that the Eagles were observant enough to notice where Burkhead was, maybe they recognized that something was afoot.

Either way, because of the play’s result, it looks like a miscalculation by the Patriots. It’s not the reason why they lost the game, but maybe they would have liked the 10 or so extra yards they probably would have gained on a regular kick return compared to the one yard they lost on this lateral.

Six Australians were selected to play this year in Los Angeles, including Kody Stattmann, Alex Ducas, Anyang Garang, Jazmin Shelley and Kobe King-Hawea. The list was higlighted, though, by Josh Green, who is being touted already as Australia’s next star in the making when he becomes NBA draft eligible in 2020.

The 6’6 (198cm) Green, who is currently the 19th-ranked high-schooler in the U.S., took advantage of the opportunity the Basketball Without Borders camp offers to showcase his skills with some of the weekend’s highlight plays. The camp featured 65 boys and girls from 36 countries, and the Sydneysider, who was named on the All Star team, described the experience as “awesome”. He said it was great to be able to compare his game with that of other top recruits from around the world.

“You learn a lot playing with kids from around the world as well,” Green said at Basketball Without Borders. “It was a really great experience. It’s a blessing … this opportunity, I’m really thankful for it. Everyone here was athletic so sometimes you need to find your way around and see what you can really do.”

Souza is the latest starter to be let go by the rebuilding Rays.

Souza, who had just arrived in Rays camp on Tuesday after attending to a family matter in Seattle, was asked about the departures in recent days of teammates Jake Odorizzi (traded to Twins) and Corey Dickerson (designated for assignment).

They’re both dear friends to me, but this is part of the business, and we all signed up for this, Souza told the Tampa Bay Times before news of his own trade. And I think this is not a shocker to anybody. This is the way the Rays operated for the last couple of years. It’s our job to be professionals, accept what’s happening and go out there and do the best we can. I think we have a good group in here.

Gus Kenworthy and Nick Goepper are the men to watch for the United States in the slopestyle. The country swept the podium in the event four years ago, though it’s without Sochi gold medalist Joss Christensen, who is unable to compete due to ACL surgery. Still, the United States is among the favorites.

In the giant slalom, Ted Ligety is the American to watch. He became the first gold medalist from the United States in the competition four years ago, and he’s a three-time world champion in the event. He’ll try and defend his medal from Sochi, though it’s a tough field overall.

Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen and Austria’s Marcel Hirscher are two of the bigger international names to watch on Saturday evening.

Below is all you need to know to watch the events, and this article will be updated with results from qualifying, first runs, and finals for both events.

He will, most likely, be playing the same position as Martinez and be the batter to provide some protection for Paul Goldschmidt in the lineup.

We haven’t sat down with him to finalize the exact thoughts, but this is an impact bat, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. He’s going to play as much as he possibly can. … We haven’t finalized exactly what’s going to happen, but if you want me to speculate right now, he’s going to play just about every day and play right field.

While the Longhorns boast five Group 1 wins, four losses in their last five games have pushed them closer to the cut line. Still, if a team’s complete body of work is important, earl- season victories over Butler and Alabama and league wins over TCU, Texas Tech and Oklahoma should help keep Texas around. However, Shaka Smart’s Horns could really use some road victories, as they’ve defeated only Iowa State away from home in Big 12 play. And an immediate opportunity comes on Saturday, as Texas can sweep Oklahoma by winning in Norman.bears_009

MLB imposes rule limiting mound visits to 6 per game

We’ll see how it goes. You call a breaking ball, you throw a fastball at 98 [mph] and the catcher is looking for a breaking ball and he gets hit. We’re talking about safety and keeping guys on the field.

Until now, the only restriction on mound visits was that a second visit to the same pitcher during an inning by a manager or coach resulted in an automatic pitching change.

Michigan often just lacked a QB who could get his feet set and deliver a quick, catchable ball to make the most of conflicted defenders:

Patterson’s ability to process defenses before the snap and punish them with quick-hitters in the RPO game figures to translate in some of Michigan’s precision calls. His ability to escape pressure and hit guys on the move when protection breaks down might also come in handy, playing behind an OL that has struggled.

Patterson represents, at worst, another good chance for Michigan to field a signal-caller who can execute the play-action back-breakers that Harbaugh’s run game regularly creates. Going from RPOs to Michigan will be an adjustment, but much of the technique will be similar. If Harbaugh and his staff also can unlock Patterson’s ability to navigate the pocket and check through progressions, we could finally see the big breakthrough.

Price, Martinez’s teammate with the Detroit Tigers in 2014-15, elaborated in an interview with USA Today Sports that was published Tuesday.

I told J.D. he will love the guys here in this clubhouse, but also told him he’ll get booed, Price told the newspaper. He’s a quiet, soft-spoken guy, but he’ll handle it. Besides, everyone gets booed. I heard Big Papi get booed many times in Fenway.

Martinez’s five-year, $110 million contract won’t be finalized until he passes a physical, likely Wednesday or Thursday. Until then, team officials, including manager Alex Cora, have declined to discuss the move or the impact that Martinez could make on an offense that finished with the fewest homers in the American League last season.

But Red Sox players were bullish about the new addition. Center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. described Martinez as a difference-maker, while first baseman Mitch Moreland called him a force. Even Hanley Ramirez, who could end up losing playing time — and perhaps even $22 million — as a result of Martinez’s arrival, expressed his enthusiasm.royals_008
