Antique rugs, even old rugs, are becoming increasingly rare and so, if their condition is good, are ever more valuable. Heirlooms definitely should be looked after, but holiday souvenir rugs, too, can be rescued if accidents happen. And if the disaster is bad enough – a lovely rug can still be reincarnated as beautiful cushions.

That certainly wasn’t the case Monday night.

“We’ve got to find solutions somehow,” Gasol said, adding that the tough defense that was part of Memphis’ reputation for years is not part of the team’s mentality. “We always had a mindset here where we can have a tough night offensively, but if we don’t score, you don’t score.”

Bulls: Markkanen participated in the morning shootaround and got treatment afterward. But coach Fred Hoiberg said the prized rookie’s back continued to tighten. … Kris Dunn had 12 points, his career-high fifth straight game in double digits. … David Nwaba had 13 points and six rebounds.

New Mexico Bowl opponents Colorado State and Marshall followed similar trajectories on the way to Saturday’s matchup at Dreamstyle Stadium in Albuquerque.

Marshall (7-5) opened the season 6-1 before a 1-4 slide to close the campaign. The Thundering Herd lost three games in that stretch by less than a touchdown, including decisions of two points to UTSA and one point to Southern Mississippi in the final two games.

Likewise, Colorado State (7-5) opened 6-2, but went 1/3 down the stretch with losses of three points at Wyoming on Nov. 4, and a 59-52 overtime defeat against Boise State on Nov. 11 in which the Broncos rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in 1:41.

Johnson, who caught the 21-yard pass that got the Browns to the Jags’ 40-yard line in the first place, is a legit home-run threat out of the backfield from almost anywhere on the field. royals_088

Couture leads Sharks past slumping Senators 5-0

One game after needing a dramatic comeback to win, the San Jose Sharks started fast and rolled to a lopsided victory.

The Sharks had the first 10 shots on goal but were kept off the scoreboard thanks to a couple of big saves by Anderson. Pavelski hit the crossbar, too.

Coach Fred Hoiberg put the ball in Dunn’s hands during the final possession and the second-year point guard was fouled by Courtney Lee while driving to the basket.

“I want to be a leader for my team and I want to make the big plays,” Dunn said. “I know we have multiple guys who can make plays, but I definitely want to be one of them.”

Following a timeout, the Knicks — who scored 10 straight points to tie it at 102 — had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Kristaps Porzingis missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Covington was being treated in the trainer’s room following the game. Brown said he injured his lower back and right hip. A timeout was called following the play and it took a few moments before anyone realized Covington was injured.

“There’s a picture somewhere of the pile of SMU players in that end zone celebrating,” said Dykes, whose first coaching job was at a Dallas-area high school. “I can promise you there’s a 13-year-old kid in the background celebrating with them somewhere.”

Two years later, Spike Dykes joined the Texas Tech staff as an assistant, and two years after that became the head coach, staying for 13 full seasons. The younger Dykes graduated from Texas Tech in 1993 and played baseball for a couple of seasons.panthers_032

The Lions will try to extend that winning streak this Thursday afternoon when they host the Minnesota Vikings.

With the win, the Saints improved to 8-2 and stayed ahead in the competitive NFC South and near the top of the jockeying for position in the conference. Washington fell to 4-6 and will need a miraculous run to salvage a frustrating season.

Here’s how the thrilling victory for the Saints went down:

The Buccaneers haven’t been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs yet, but they’re looking like the longest of long shots after losing to the Packers 26-20 in overtime on Sunday. The Saints’ win on Sunday over Carolina makes them the clear leaders to win the division. The Panthers should still have a shot at a wild card bid. The Falcons probably need to win out to have a shot, and the Buccaneers will likely be watching the postseason from home yet again.

His name was announced in the Golden State Warriors’ starting lineup but was obscured by a cloud of boos.

In the five games since Kyle Turris landed on in Nashville, the Predators’ newly formed second scoring line — also featuring Fiala and Craig Smith — has combined for 16 points, including seven goals. While we’ve already tooted Smith’s horn as a promising fantasy dark horse, Fiala merits his own turn. A breakout year could be in play for the 21-year-old sophomore.

While he isn’t seeing that much action, Kuemper is making the most of his opportunities with his new club in Los Angeles. Filling in for Jonathan Quick here and there, including a back-to-back start and relief appearance over the weekend, Kuemper sports a 1.62 goals-against average and .943 save percentage.

Every time he touched the ball: boos. At the free throw line: chants of “cupcake.”

The Warriors routed the Thunder and Durant was brilliant, but the night was emotional. Durant and his teammates walked off the floor wearing cupcake shirts, a returned volley toward the fans.

If the small sample size doesn’t scare you, Subban’s numbers through three earlier games (2.06 goals-against average and .936 save percentage) offer much appeal.

When Durant takes the floor Wednesday night, there will still be some boos and cupcake chants. But the visceral, vitriolic animosity between Thunder fans and Durant is largely gone. One, because they got it out of their system with that night in February. And two, because the Thunder organization has pressed the conversation forward, rather than backward.

There were a lot of examples, like general manager Sam Presti’s message of “carry on” the day Durant announced his decision to leave. Or the metaphorical reminders of passing out baseballs, or pictures of MacGyver. But nothing sent the message stronger than what the front office did.steelers_014

Manning is 17-8 as a starter against Washington.

New York snapped a three-game losing streak with its 12-9 overtime win against the Chiefs. Quarterback Eli Manning, whose pregame speech was credited with providing a spark, will try to make it two straight wins.

“It’s a short week, but everyone here is excited about the opportunity to go play on Thanksgiving,” Manning told the team’s website.

He has completed 493 of 841 passes (59 percent) for 5,934 yards with 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions vs. the Redskins.

“We felt there were a lot of really good options in terms of what might be out there,” Lynch said. “But ultimately, none of those things other than C.J., who we are happy with, were concrete.

“An opportunity presented itself. From the compensation that we ended up doing the deal for, we just really felt like it was a no-brainer. Garoppolo was a guy that we had really coveted.”

The Saints can start scoreboard-watching, as they’ve climbed to within range of the Eagles and are even with the Rams and Vikings atop the NFC. (Not to mention just ahead of the Panthers.) They need to keep handling their business, and against a team that had no answer for the Vikings on the ground or in the air, they should with their newly-balanced offense. Washington is already in danger of losing sight of the NFC wild-card teams.

A good (and rare) Thanksgiving rematch, with the Lions having won last year on a last-second field goal. The Lions have won four straight on their traditional Thanksgiving date, a little treat for those who are perpetually looking for a reason to fire Jim Caldwell. It’s a tall order to pull off this year with the way the Vikings are playing right now on both sides of the ball. Matthew Stafford’s Lions still have a habit of putting themselves in position to have to come back late; they can’t get away with that against this team.nike_steelers_2617

I’m very unpredictable, and it separates me from everyone else.

Postgame, the Drunken Bears change out of their cleats and head off to their regular bar, Ranalli’s in Lincoln Park. Usually the Bears will reward the MVP of the night with a special trophy: a can of Natty Ice. Nobody really deserved the MVP can tonight, so by default it goes to the player who scored the team’s only touchdown. “Please don’t write anything like, what they lack in talent, they make up for in spirit,” a Bears player jokes before heading off the field.

Stiff Arms captain Barnes’ stat line: one receiving touchdown, two-and-a-half beers consumed. He and his teammates have one more game to play tonight. Then they’ll go to Corcoran’s, a bar a couple blocks away, to celebrate with some black and blues: Guiness mixed with Blue Moon.

“The way you govern in this country is by being in the middle. I fully expected him to move to the middle and really provide leadership on immigration, secure the borders. But I was just appalled, right after his inauguration, how things started out, [with him] being more divisive and really being more polarizing on religion and immigration.”

“The roof bump, which got me 100 million views and is probably my craziest stunt of all-time, is a part of who I am,” said Janela. “I wouldn’t go back and change it.

Janela built momentum organically, and was asked to wrestle in the prestigious PWG Battle of Los Angeles this year.

“I’m shutting up a lot of the doubters,” said Janela. “People characterize my style as ‘garbage wrestling’ because of the roof bump, but Combat Zone Wrestling is what I grew up on and it’s what I loved in my teens. Why not live out my dreams?

The way he’s handling himself? I would call it perfect.

One common-sense rule change that could at least contribute to preventing hits like this would be adapting the college rule: Once your knee hits, you’re down. If Flacco dives head-first, he has a first down.

DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Texans: He enjoyed the week’s highest score, at least through the 4 p.m. ET games, with 36.4 PPR and 28.4 non-PPR fantasy points. Amazingly, neither threatened his personal bests (44.8 and 35.8, in 2014 Week 13), and in fact Hopkins’ PPR score was only his third best in 71 career games. Still, it marked his fourth consecutive game with a touchdown, and it put him on pace for 337.4 PPR and 234.5 non-PPR fantasy points, which would shatter his previous career highs of 331.1 and 220.1, set in 2015.

Paul Richardson, WR, Seahawks: Well, few people saw that coming, evidenced by the fact that he was active in a mere 5.05 percent of ESPN leagues on Sunday. Richardson broke through for a career-high 28.5 PPR fantasy points, fueled by two touchdowns as well as a remarkable 48-yard catch on the game-winning drive.

“I love the way that A-Rod does things,” Ortiz says. “He’s a guy that works extremely hard at what he does. I have learned so much from him. To me, that’s my goal, to be able to get to his level. He’s been doing this for a while, and he’s extremely smart.”

On air, Rodriguez has subjected Ortiz to only good-natured hazing. In fact, he spends much of his time putting him in position to succeed – teeing up a point for him, then allowing him to connect with it.

Taylor rejoined the Giants on Wednesday. The strike officially ended the following day, the players union capitulating on all major issues. But the league decided that only the players who had crossed before the union folded would be allowed to play in that weekend’s games.

The Jaguars were already setting up to be snug against the cap in 2018

The original trademark was made by North Carolina State University, whose fans use the “Wolfie” hand gesture while cheering on their sports teams, known as the Wolfpack.

The Week in Wrestling turned to Sports Illustrated legal expert Michael McCann, who was asked to explain the legalities behind the cease and desist.

“It’s hard to give a declaratory answer without reading the letter,” said McCann. “As I understand it, NC State trademarked the hand signal, but the issue could be copyright.

McCann explained that if WWE has copyright interest in the gesture, they can then argue that the hand gesture is their intellectual property.

Further, it is believed that Jones feels Goodell is too iron-fisted with player suspensions. Until recently, Jones was a steadfast backer of Goodell. But the suspensions have made him increasingly angry. He also cannot fathom how Goodell won’t put his foot down and force players to stand for the anthem. If players don’t stand, Jones is said to think, then so be it—they shouldn’t play.

Skating with Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau, in the role of the departed Jaromir Jagr, Dadonov is having just as much success as Jagr did with the young stars. He is up to 11 points in 10 games, and his 18 percent shooting is actually lower than the 22 percent he managed in Russia last season.

The Jaguars were already setting up to be snug against the cap in 2018, and there’s still the little matter of quarterback as they approach an offseason in which multiple quality QBs could be available for the first time in a long time.

Aaron Rodgers was enjoying another outstanding year (13 touchdowns, three interceptions, 103.2 quarterback rating) until he suffered what may be a season-ending collarbone injury in Week 6 against Minnesota. Rookie running back Aaron Jones has asserted himself well with rushing performances of 125-plus yards in two of Green Bay’s past three outings.

Dallas and Axel are both miscast in Miz’s entourage.

WWE has placed them in main events and key programs alongside Miz on Raw, but it is difficult to suddenly treat their characters with any sense of legitimacy after years of futility on the roster.

Ziggler and Ryder are stars in their own right, have personalities that would mesh perfectly with Miz, and could even have challenged (and perhaps won) for the tag team titles, ultimately adding more credibility to The Miz while also keeping two other talents fresh.

I was new as coach. They were listening. They were following. But the next year, you fall apart again. Maybe you still want to be coached, and to play together, but you also want to try out different things on your own. That is the natural progression of a team growing apart.”

A Steelers touchdown later, Detroit found itself in the same position, got stuffed on two Dwayne Washington runs and chose to then kick a field goal. Then, with just over two minutes to go, Detroit was back in the red zone, down five, and again went four-and-out, opting for passes short of the sticks and an ill-advised Theo Riddick draw play.

The Mavs’ win over Memphis on Wednesday is their only win during a home-heavy opening stretch — now they hit the road for five of their next seven. Dallas is the league’s worst rebounding squad and the defense has been porous. Dennis Smith Jr. has turned some heads with his nose for the rim, but Harrison Barnes has been inefficient.

While the league waits for an outcome on Eric Bledsoe’s pending departure from Phoenix, the Suns played a downright dignified brand of basketball last week, picking up a couple of home wins over Sacramento and Utah. Though there haven’t been any individual standouts in the inefficient offense, Mike James has been a pleasant surprise. Now the Suns take the road for four games this week.

Some great drama in the Red Sox’s division-clinching win over Houston on Saturday.

Late Thursday night, Elliott’s attorneys filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Texas to vacate whatever suspension results from the appeal process. The lawsuit’s main contention is that there was a “league-orchestrated conspiracy . . . to hide critical information.”

A few minutes later, every Raven and every Steeler stood at attention for the anthem. (There also was an Air Force flyover.) No booing then. During the first TV timeout, a serviceman was introduced to massive cheers. During the fourth quarter, seven servicemen appeared on the field, to more cheers.

After the yearlong investigation, the league determined Elliott had been physical with his accuser three times during the week of July 17.

Game 1 of the Boston-Houston ALDS series: Chris Sale at Justin Verlander. Now that’s going to be a good event, and New Englanders are likely hoping it will be a day game, saving them from channel-flipping with the Patriots in a Thursday-nighter at Tampa Bay.

In game 161 of the 162-game season, David Price (the highly paid one, who came back from an arm injury and was made an Andrew Miller-like lefty specialist who could pitch anytime in relief) came out of the bullpen in the top of the seventh, up 5-2, tying run at the plate, no outs, to try to save the division title. Price got three outs without allowing an inherited runner to score, in the rain, with Price striking out George Springer, a New Englander from Connecticut who went to UConn, for the last out. Pretty good.
